The Best Decision
Wait for the right time. Wait for more certainty. Wait until the numbers make more sense.
And then there are moments when you realize that waiting is its own decision, and perhaps not the right thing to do after all.
I'm good at waiting. Very patient. But the the journey that led to two 718s and an unforgettable European adventure with a lifelong friend was one of those moments where waiting wasn't the right call.
Looking back, it would have been easy to find reasons not to do it. There were practical arguments, financial arguments, and all the usual reasons to leave a dream for 'someday'. Some of those crept into my mind in the early days for sure.
But someday is a dangerous place. Too many great experiences end up living there forever.
Thanks to my fellow enthusiast, who reminded me all too succinctly that 'life is short', we didn't dwell on the decision too long. We took the leap. We placed the orders. We made the plans. Sure, we waited, but the waiting was just the result of the mechanism. In fact, on reflection, I think you could say we made the decision damn fast, in the spirit of 'seize the day' and all that.
Then we waited some more.
And more.
And still more.
But we weren't waiting on the decision. And really, we didn't look back on that at all once it was made made. Surprisingly, to me ,perhaps, I never doubted the decision once it was made. Never thought I should back out. Never wavered from the commitment. And haven't looked back since.
We crossed an ocean and turned a shared passion into memories that will last forever. The cars were incredible, the roads unforgettable, the camaraderie, the angst, the adventures, all powerful and timeless. But what stands out most now is the decision itself. We chose to live the experience instead of merely talking about it. The older I get, the more I appreciate that lesson. The value of those moments isn't measured in horsepower, lap times, or photographs. It's measured in the simple fact that they happened. A dream became a reality because we decided not to wait.
Every time I look at my 718, I'm reminded that life is meant to be lived in the present tense. The future is important, but it is never promised. The opportunities in front of us today are the only ones we can truly count on.
So take the trip. Start the project. Order the car. Have the adventure.
The lesson wasn't just about buying a Porsche or driving incredible roads across Europe. It was about embracing life while the opportunity exists, and sharing that experience to the fullest.
And that's a lesson worth holding onto. We all have to keep seizing the day.
It was the best decision, and I'm forever grateful I was encouraged to make it together.
