Too often we find ourselves 'catching up' on the things we didn't manage to get done during the week.
Lives are so busy these days (maybe they always were) that it seems to get increasingly hard to carve out time to follow our non-productive pursuits. There's always something that needs doing; a lawn that needs mowing, groceries to get, fixing that loose door hinge, re-grouting a tiled floor, you name it.
It's about maximizing the enjoyment times that come in between all of the 'have to do' things, isn't it? Granted, trying to enjoy all the mandatories is something I strive to do, but sometimes drudgery is just drudgery.
That's why I spend lots of time trying to get through the things that need to get done during the week, so that I can then enjoy some of the things I really enjoy doing and not be feeling guilty, or pressed for time come the end of the week. I'll throw a load of laundry in while washing the dishes in the evening, so that little chore is getting done then as opposed to on Saturday morning. Maybe a quick vacuum of the kitchen while the pasta is cooking, or paying some bills online on the laptop while watching TV.
So when the chores fall by the wayside, the fun can happen! Last weekend was a morning of quality cleaning time. A chore for many, but not this lucky fellow. A sunny day, no work to get done, no timeline to follow, just an outing in my special machine. I headed over to another P-car aficionado's driveway and we spent the morning yapping, cleaning, and admiring our rides. We didn't even go driving, just beautifying!
When weekends like that roll around - when I can focus on the things that give me real enjoyment - there's not much better. It can be sipping coffee reading the paper, going for a swim, hanging out with family and friends, and more often than not, washing the car! In a few weeks it will be heading out onto the water in the sailboat - something that seems to recharge the batteries like few other things.
But there's one thing that seems to top them all, and that's the dream fulfilled: taking the Boxster out for a rip. Combining that with travelling 'home home' is really the best of all the worlds, but I can't get out there as often as I would like, so the weekend outings here in Ottawa have to suffice.
With 'Red' all cleaned up last weekend, and tucked away for the rainy week / weekend this week, I'm all set for some nice driving. There's rumblings of a driving meet-up this weekend, maybe with a breakfast and some Calabogie area roads in this part of eastern Ontario, but either way, I'll be twisting the key and taking to the tarmac, seeking out some curves with the top down and the big 4-litre growling.
There’s something irresistible about driving on a winding road in the sunshine. The way the car hugs each corner, responding instantly to every touch of the wheel, making me feel completely connected to the road. This engine infuses every press of the throttle with purpose, and each gearchange feels like a conversation between me and the machine.
The sun beats down from above (sunscreen please!), making the Carmine Red paint pop; the sky stretches wide above, and the world narrows to the road ahead - twisting, climbing, falling away; the wind rushes past the sides, carrying the smells of warm pavement and trees, while the tires grip hard through every curve.
It’s not about speed. It’s about control, rhythm, and the sheer joy of movement. Out there, under the open sky, the car becomes more than just a vehicle - it’s freedom on four wheels.
More to come for sure...
