The Road NOT Taken

This week was a lesson in striking while the iron is hot, or rather perhaps not striking.

I struck when the airfares were good and the weather was bad, and I booked myself a trip out east via Air Canada, instead of via Air Porsche.

By that I mean I flew to visit my folks instead of taking the red machine. When I booked the trip, April sunshine seemed an eternity away, and fresh dumpings of snow had threatened to make a springtime East Coast drive miserable, and probably not even viable.

Of course, my luck being what it is, the weather in New Brunswick for the week I was just there was beautiful. Perfect convertible driving weather, with sunny and high cloud days, no precipitation, and lovely moderate temperatures. While the Boxster sulked at home in the garage, I endured four aborted takeoffs on two different flights (not that I'm complaining as I'd rather those pilots were overly-cautious). Of course that led to long delays with connecting flights. Misery.

At some point, sitting in Montreal's Dorval airport I was calculating just how far along the route I would be by that point had I jumped in the car at 3 AM and headed east, instead of climbing into an Uber and heading towards the airport. All in all, the hour and forty-minute flight ended up taking almost 13 hours door-to-door.

For comparison, I have driven it in 10 hours. To be fair, that was in my foolish youth, but I can still easily do it in 12.

Of course that meant that while at the homestead I didn't have my chariot to wind around the local roads in. Ultimately it meant that I could focus more on drinking tea and helping the folks out with a few little chores, But I wouldn't have minded an outing or two in the roads around there that I know so well.

I did get to visit my buddy and his Silverstone Metallic Honda S2000, but he had barely had a chance to get the cover off and cleaned it up post-winter so we didn't get out in it. Something else that will have to wait until next time.

As I flew back from my quick visit, I mentally mapped out the next one in a couple of months when I won't leave the car in the garage. Instead I will take it out for what it's meant for:

Road trip!!! Can't wait!!!
