Further Reflection

Well there you have it, after what feels like a long process of research, test driving, visiting dealerships, and intense back-and-forth conversations, it's finally done.

I put pen to paper last night and signed off on the purchase of a brand new - yes brand new - 2021 Porsche Boxster. There will be more ruminating in the weeks to come I'm sure, but this is just about the great feeling in my chest, 'the morning after'.

I've been a 'sporty' driver for the better part of 30+ years. Slightly more than an armchair enthusiast, but not a full-blown automotive-nut (though many of my friends may argue that), since Andrew and I started driving his 1990 black Honda Civic Si 'round the roads near Acadia way back when.

I've dabbled in karting, and taking various of my cars over the years out onto racetracks, but really the highlights have been the windy, curvy, twisty road driving trips that I've done. Almost all have included my fellow automotive enthusiast, Andrew, and really hit a high 3 years ago when we did the European delivery trip for his BMW M2.

Suffice it to say I had not envisioned doing something like that for myself, ever. Always figured I would tagalong on Andrew's big car purchases, and that was fine by me. The Germany trip was a highlight, and buying Andrew’s S2000 from him sure worked out well for me.

But when Andrew floated the idea of me also getting a car on his next European delivery, that planted the seed. BMW had cancelled their program just at the time he was pondering an upgrade to his M2. So the natural inclination was to look towards Porsche.

And so, on little more than a flight of fancy, I did. And something happened.

It feels like the right car for me now. At this time in my life. Over 50 but 'not dead yet!'  I chose a bright red replacement for my 19 year-old S2000, modernizing it, if you will. There are a ton of options down a road that Porsche will take you on, so I carefully selected a combination that I think speaks to me, and reflects who I am as a driving enthusiast.

Certain friends are gonna be over the moon for me. Mum and Dad too. Adrienne, Will, Nelson - they all get what driving sports cars means to me. They'll be chuffed - and surprised!

I guess talking about a car this way makes me a 'car guy' doesn’t it?

Yes. Yes it does.

And now I’m a Porsche guy too.

Wow.
